To an extent, genes can affect the weight loss process, but there are many more factors that combine and help you gain weight. Some factors like exercise, diet, lifestyle, and more can help you to gain extra pounds. Dietician Sheela Seharawat explains on a very simple level that your weight depends on the number of calories you consume, the number of calories you store, and the number of calories you burn up. Also, each of these factors is influenced by a combination of genes as well as the environment too. To maintain your weight, you consistently burn all of the calories that you consume in the course of a day.

Diet clinic experts say that the strength of the genetic impact on weight disorders varies from person to person. Research suggests that for several people, genes account for just 25 percent to be overweight; at the same time, as for others, the genetic influence is as high as 70 percent and above.  Dietician Sheela Seharawat explains how much your weight depends upon your genes.

  • Your likelihood of obesity is above 80 percent if one or both your parents are overweight.

  • If you can’t lose weight in spite of physical activity and intake of a low-calorie diet.

  • If you have been overweight for much of your life. 

Your genes are a lower contributor to obesity 

  • If you can maintain your weight by following a proper diet and regular exercise.

  • If the availability of food influences you.

  • If you regain weight during the holiday season or after changing your exercise routine.
